Understanding the silver rate in India

The silver rate today is quoted per gram for jewellery and per kg for bars, and it sits between jewellery metal and industrial commodity — which is why it behaves differently from gold. Here is what drives the number on this page, and what to check before you buy.

Why the rate differs by city

The metal price is global, but the retail rate you are quoted carries state GST, transport and local dealer margins. Two cities can be a few rupees per gram apart on the same day, which adds up quickly on a kilo purchase.

999, 925 and 800 explained

999 is fine silver, 99.9% pure, and is what coins and bars are made from. 925 is sterling silver, 92.5% pure, alloyed for strength and used for jewellery and cutlery. 800 is a harder, lower-purity alloy used for utensils and heavier articles. Each is quoted at its own rate.

Silver moves more than gold

Roughly half of silver demand is industrial — solar panels, electronics and electrical contacts — so it reacts to manufacturing cycles as well as to investment flows. Expect sharper swings than gold in both directions.

Rate versus what you pay

The rates here are for the metal itself. Jewellery adds making charges and 3% GST, while coins and bars carry a smaller premium over spot. Compare the premium, not just the headline rate, when you are buying to invest.

Read the one-year chart first

Every city page carries a one-year price history chart with the 52-week high and low. Seeing where today's rate sits inside that range is far more useful than the day's percentage change on its own.

Buying by gram or by kilogram

Silver is quoted per gram for jewellery and per kilogram for bars and bullion. Both figures are shown on each city page so you can compare a jeweller's per-gram quote against the bullion rate directly.

Silver price FAQs

How often is the silver rate updated?

Rates are refreshed daily for every city we cover, and each city page shows the date of the latest update along with the change from the previous day.

Why does the silver rate vary between cities?

Local taxes, transport and dealer margins differ by state and city. The global metal price is identical everywhere, but the delivered retail rate is not.

What is the difference between 999 and 925 silver?

999 is fine silver at 99.9% purity, used for coins and bars. 925 is sterling silver at 92.5% purity, alloyed with copper so it is hard enough for jewellery and cutlery to hold their shape.

Do these rates include GST and making charges?

No. The rates shown are for the metal only. Add 3% GST, plus making charges on jewellery or a dealer premium on coins and bars, to arrive at what you will actually pay.

Is silver a good investment compared to gold?

Silver is cheaper to enter and can rise faster, but it is also considerably more volatile because industrial demand drives a large share of it. Many buyers hold both rather than choosing one.

How accurate are the rates on this page?

They are indicative, aggregated rates meant for comparison and tracking. Your local dealer's quote will differ once premiums, making charges and taxes are applied, so confirm the final price before buying.
