Understanding the gold rate in India

The gold rate today is quoted per gram and per 10 grams, separately for 22K and 24K, and it is watched as closely for a wedding purchase as for an investment. Here is what sits behind the number on this page, and what to check before you walk into a jeweller.

Why the rate differs by city

Gold is imported and priced globally, but the rate you pay locally also carries state GST, octroi where it still applies, local jeweller association margins and transport. That is why Chennai and Mumbai rarely quote the same number on the same morning — pick your city for the figure that matters to you.

22K, 24K and 18K explained

24K is 99.9% pure and is what bullion, coins and bars are made from. 22K is 91.6% pure and is the standard for Indian jewellery, because pure gold is too soft to hold a setting. 18K is 75% pure and is used for studded and diamond jewellery. Each purity is quoted at its own rate.

What actually moves the price

The international spot price in dollars, the rupee-dollar exchange rate, and import duty together set most of the movement. Wedding and festival demand around Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and Diwali adds a seasonal push on top.

Rate versus what you pay

The rate quoted here is for the metal itself. A jeweller adds making charges — often 8% to 25% of the gold value — plus 3% GST, and may deduct wastage. Two shops quoting the same gold rate can still hand you very different bills.

Read the one-year chart first

A single day's rate tells you little on its own. The one-year history chart on every city page shows where today sits against the 52-week high and low, which is the context you need before committing to a large purchase.

Hallmarking and purity checks

Since hallmarking became mandatory, every piece should carry a six-digit HUID along with the BIS mark and purity grade. Check it on the invoice and on the piece itself, because the rate only holds if the purity does.

Gold price FAQs

How often is the gold rate updated?

Rates are refreshed daily for every city we cover, and each city page shows the date of the most recent update alongside the change from the previous day.

Why is the gold rate different in each city?

Local taxes, transport costs and jeweller association margins vary by state and city. The underlying metal price is the same, but the delivered retail rate differs by a few hundred rupees per 10 grams between cities.

Should I buy 22K or 24K gold?

Buy 22K if you want jewellery you will actually wear, since 24K is too soft to hold its shape. Buy 24K in coins or bars if you are buying gold as an investment and want maximum purity with no making charges.

Do these rates include GST and making charges?

No. The rates shown are for the metal only. Expect 3% GST on the total and making charges on top, which vary widely between jewellers and are the main reason final bills differ.

Is today a good day to buy gold?

Compare today's rate against the one-year chart and the 52-week range on your city's page. Buying nearer the low end of that range is a better entry than buying into a rally, though gold prices cannot be predicted with certainty.

How accurate are the rates on this page?

They are indicative, aggregated rates intended for comparison and tracking. Your local jeweller's quote will differ once making charges, wastage and taxes are added, so confirm the final price before you buy.
